Bio:
Bones Howe  was born in Minneapolis, Minn. in 1933 and moved to Sarasota Fla. in 1941. He graduated from Sarasota High School in 1951 and received his bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communications in 1956 from Georgia Tech. During his high school years, he was a drummer with a local jazz quintet and a dance band. While at Tech in Atlanta, he played with all the local bands and in the all the local clubs. After graduation he decided to combine his interest in electronics and his passion for music and moved to Hollywood, California to start a career as an audio engineer in a recording studio. From 1956 to 1962 he earned a reputation as one of the top recording engineers in Hollywood and participated in the development of many of the multiple-microphone and stereo and multi-track studio recording techniques which are still in use today. In 1962 he resigned his recording studio job to become the first independent recording engineer and three years later started producing records. Since 1965, he has produced hit recordings with many artists including The Turtles, The Association, The 5th Dimension, Tom Waits, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley (he was the Co-Producer and Music Director for the ELVIS "Comeback" TV Special in 1968); and has received more than twenty Gold and Platinum awards from the Recording Industry of America. In 1969 he was awarded a Grammy from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (N.A.R.A.S.) for his production of the Record of the Year: AQUARIUS/LET THE SUNSHINE IN by the 5th Dimension. In 1977 he became interested in promoting the use of pop and rock music in motion pictures which led to a pioneering role in the field of music supervision for film: his film credits as music supervisor include BACK TO THE FUTURE, ABOUT LAST NIGHT, ONE FROM THE HEART, and BUCKAROO BANZAI. In 1986 he accepted the position of Vice-President and head of the Music Department at Columbia Pictures and rose to the Exec. V.P. level when the Sony Corporation bought the studio in 1989. In 1992 he left the studio to return to independent music production, film music supervision, and studio engineering and is currently still active in all three fields. In 1999 he received an award from N.A.R.A.S. for engineering the Grammy-winning COUNT PLAYS DUKE big-band jazz CD. His most recent production includes the Anthony Wilson CD, ADULT THEMES, which received 5-stars in Downbeat.
